The path less pedaled in Long Beach

Long Beach has been applauded following the city’s construction of more than 130 miles of bike lanes in the downtown area. But while more affluent parts of the city celebrate safer routes and roads for non-car transportation, residents in  Long Beach’s poorer neighborhoods won’t be seeing improvements to their bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure until 2014.  Ironically, residents who bike and walk -- not for health and leisure reasons -- but for lack of a car, will continue in unsafe conditions until the "bike friendly" changes come to them.
