Undocumented people left behind in Affordable Care Act

Despite the fanfare accompanying the beginning of health insurance exchanges and expanded Medicaid enrollment, the Affordable Care Act will not provide health care for everyone. Federal law prohibits undocumented immigrants from purchasing insurance through the new exchanges, and from enrolling in Medicaid.  A 2011 study found that 14.6 percent, almost 7 million, of uninsured people in the United States are undocumented immigrants.
