Hunger strike: youth leading the way on immigration
Kern County, despite its reputation for being a politically conservative region, has seen a new generation of activists picking up the torch for civil rights. Young people -- many of them sons and daughters of immigrants -- comprised the majority of a local group that fasted for 24 hours to support for a national hunger strike campaign. The campaign is meant to pressure Republicans to sign an immigration reform bill. The Bakersfield group had varied motivations for joining the effort. “What we want to do is give politicians like [Bakersfield Congressman Kevin] McCarthy the chance to do something for us and support reform.
