Richmond's 'Raw' talent
Corner groceries were a lifeline for many growing up in North Richmond. One of these neighborhood corner stores provides the setting of a new play, “Po’ Boys Kitchen,” written by Richmond native Donte Clark and produced and performed by the RAW Talent performing troupe. The play comments on Richmond through the characters passing through the convenience store, one of the last Black-owned businesses in Richmond. “For Black folks in Richmond particularly, it’s about the [loss of] Black businesses. The play does cherish the memories of ‘back then’ but it also makes the statement, 'We have the right to ownership, now.'” More about the play, which will open in March at De Anza High School, and the group putting it on, is on Richmond Pulse.[youtube=http://youtu.be/quIllSB6BT8]
