'Male Academy' fosters academics, and relationships
The Male Academy, an elective course offered in middle and high schools in Long Beach, was launched with the aim of helping young men of color in the school setting. The class helps boys improve grades and graduation rates through academics, culture and history, but it also incorporates social-emotional skill building -- self-awareness, respect for self and others and choosing positive relationships. "To break the racial tension amongst the 'cliques' in schools, the Male Academy brings leaders of each racial group together to build friendships. This is done in hopes that each leader will carry this with them outside the classroom and show others that they too can make friends with someone outside their race."
