How does your community view depression?
Most people can remember feeling anxious or sad at times, but for many young people these feelings amount to more than a day or a week of high school blues. But depression in teens can be hard to recognize, especially when you factor in cultural stigmas around mental illness. Some research also suggests that depression can run in families. But that doesn’t mean every family is willing to talk about depression. "When I was unable to shake off my sadness, my family would say, 'You’re not being grateful for what you have.'" The radio story aired on KQED; that perspective and more is on Youth Radio.
