Victims of scams speak out
Victims of scams told their stories at a press conference hosted by the Federal Trade Commission and New America Media. Officials said that although they could not prosecute every case of fraud, the accumulation of specific stories helps law enforcement make priorities for investigation. The FTC is expanding outreach to educate low-income persons and communities of color about the scams lurking about. The effort is well-timed, as experts suspect immigration scams will be on the rise following recent immigration legislation – already reports abound of people preying on undocumented immigrants with false offers to secure them green cards or speed up their legalization process.
