American Samoans are being shortchanged for citizenship
American Samoa has one of the highest military recruitment rates of any U.S. state or territory, but they are not officially U.S. citizens – people born there do not get the same rights as people born in the United States. The complicated nationality of American Samoans means they can legally reside in the United States and apply for passports, but cannot vote and may be barred from seeking political office or government jobs. A legal case is in the works to get equal rights for people born in U.S. territories. “I feel that we won already.
