Khmerican: connecting the Cambodian diaspora
Phatry Derek Pan first heard the term “Khmerican” to describe a martial arts kick. The word caught on, and so did Pan’s idea of a media site to reach Cambodian Americans in cities all over the United States – enclaves of people that fled after the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975. Once Khmerican.com gained traction, the definition of “Khmerican” went from catchy to meaningful for the members of the Cambodian diaspora. “I realized what Khmerican stood for. One hundred years from now, people might say we were the first historians of Khmer America.” The story and a video are on Voicewaves.
