Fifty years after Chavez, farmworkers' struggle continues

On the eve of Cesar Chavez’s birthday, the towns of Planada and LeGrand came together to celebrate the life of the Mexican-American icon. The kinds of struggles that mobilized Chavez are concentrated in the Central Valley, where the majority of the estimated 800,000 farmworkers in California live and work – and roughly 50 percent are undocumented. “The community in Planada embraces agricultural life. A lot of us come from farmworker families.
