According to new statistics, there are 15 million Latinos in California, but less than two percent of those working have a college degree. An estimated 70 percent of Merced students are Latinos; if this demographic entered college ready to achieve, the ripple effect could be astounding. "A combination of factors make [the] road from high school to graduation difficult for first generation Latino college students, and the barriers often begin with the significantly higher chance that a Latino student will attend a low-performing high school in a low income area."
