Navigating Boyle Heights isn't easy for the disabled

Residents with physical disabilities may soon see improvements on the uneven and badly cracked sidewalks in their neighborhoods. A victorious lawsuit on behalf of a quarter million disabled city residents claimed the city was in violation of the American With Disabilities Act; the court ordered the city to allocate funds to mend broken sidewalks all over Los Angeles. "The ADA says people with disabilities should have equal access to the world, but the first part of the world is the street outside your home. So if you cannot get past the street outside your home, if the sidewalk makes it impossible to get out of the house, then it is a barrier to your civil rights." Disabled residents from Boyle Heights talk about navigating the neighborhood's hostile sidewalks, on Boyle Heights Beat.
