Documentary 'No Más Bebés' comes home to Boyle Heights
Historian Virginia Espino’s research into the coerced sterilization of Mexican women in East Los Angeles in the late 1960s and 70s compelled her to produce “No Más Bebés,” the story of the victims and of the class action lawsuit against Los Angeles County filed on their behalf. Director Renee Tajima-Peña is a native of L.A., where the film was screened in Boyle Heights as part of the Ambulante Film Festival. “I didn’t want to write a history that showed the victimization of women. I wanted to show how women fought back and to build on that legacy of Mexican women, Chicana women, as activists and as people who fought back against injustice.” More background on the film is in a story on Boyle Heights Beat.
