Students breathe easier at Ramona Gardens school
A new indoor air filtration system was installed in Murchison Elementary School over the summer to reduce the levels of outdoor pollutants inside classrooms. Students are regularly exposed to contaminants from a nearby freeway, an industrial zone and a rail line, all high-impact pollution sources. A 2012 Boyle Heights Beat story reported that children living in the zip code that includes Ramona Gardens have an unusually high rate of asthma-related hospitalizations. "In the classroom, you don’t necessarily notice the difference, but the results as far as our office referrals have been significant." The story is on Boyle Heights Beat.
