Students breathe easier at Ramona Gardens school

A new indoor air filtration system was installed in Murchison Elementary School over the summer to reduce the levels of outdoor pollutants inside classrooms. Students are regularly exposed to contaminants from a nearby freeway, an industrial zone and a rail line, all high-impact pollution sources. A 2012 Boyle Heights Beat story reported that children living in the zip code that includes Ramona Gardens have an unusually high rate of asthma-related hospitalizations. "In the classroom, you don’t necessarily notice the difference, but the results as far as our office referrals have been significant." The story is on Boyle Heights Beat.ramona school
