For one young woman, DACA was a lifesaver
Maria’s family came to the United States from Mexico when she was just 5 months old; she's been living as an undocumented minor in Bakersfield for the last 13 years. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals grants eligible youth like Maria, who came to the country as children, temporary relief from deportation and the right to work. "I immediately applied for jobs, and then got my license. It was nice to finally be able to drive around and not have to wonder, 'Oh my God, what if I get pulled over?'"
