Girl skaters who break barriers

Skating is getting more popular in Boyle Heights, which has skating facilities at two of its city parks. Males dominate the scene, but that doesn’t deter Ilse Gutiérrez, a 20-year old Boyle Heights native who returns to her old neighborhood to skate at Hollenbeck Park. "When they see a girl skating, it’s like they’ve never seen it before. They go crazy. Guys really dig girls that skate, too. They will hit you up. It’s nice. You gain confidence, and you have more friends." Read more about Ilse and the Boyle Heights skating scene, on Boyle Heights Beat.skaters
