Mother of four helping to transform education in Eastern Coachella Valley

Sandra Ramirez joined the Schools Action Team to take an active role in the health of her children and her community. By helping to organize initiatives to support social determinants of health — like education — she feels she's also encouraging her peers to get involved. "A lot of people feel like they are not deserving of more, especially the ones that have come from countries where there are not as many resources available. A lot of them tell me ‘what else could we ask for?’ It takes a lot of work to change that kind of mentality and we end up shortchanging ourselves." The "local hero" of Eastern Coachella Valley is profiled on Coachella Unincorporated.
