A dispute with farming collective over who will cultivate hospital's community garden

When the landlord of White Memorial Medical Center asked the nonprofit group to abandon the space in February, Proyecto Jardín refused to vacate the garden it was operating on the hospital's land. Members of the urban farming collective slept in tents and staged actions to drum up support. The grassroots organization has managed the garden for over 15 years, says its members. White Memorial said it was concerned about Proyecto Jardín’s productivity and turned over management of the garden to another nonprofit group. "We welcome partners that want to work with us and we expect to have a lease with White Memorial sooner than later, so that we can work effectively without the threat… people are not going to stop camping until the threat of eviction is gone." The story of a disputed community garden, on Boyle Heights Beat.
