What it's like to grow up queer and Purepecha

Alejandra Zamora always knew she was different. Zamora grew up in the Coachella Valley and is a member of the indigenous Purépecha community, a fervently Catholic indigenous group originally from Michoacán, Mexico. It was not an easy environment to be a queer teenager. Now 24 and an aspiring lawyer, Zamora is a community activist championing support for local LGBTQ and immigrant youth. “Be confident about who you are, no matter how many hurtful things you go through.
