Monkey around on the swing-set

Teens in southern Kern County use Photovoice to document parks where you find more men playing cards than you find children at play. In the face of this challenge, though, kids will transform a broken swing-set into monkey bars after gang members removed the swings to keep people out of the parks. This is one segment of a photo documentary project, by teens in Kern County, featuring the top health-related stories that they wanted to develop: teen pregnancy; air quality & related health issues, such as asthma; and unsafe parks. Partners were The Dolores Huerta FoundationThe Central California Obesity Prevention Program and Venice Arts, an arts organization which coordinates an 8-community participant-documentary project, Picturing Health, covering diverse areas of Southern and Central California.
