School is Out, But Lunch is Still Being Served
In 2011, more than 84 percent -- or 2 million children -- who received federally funded school meals during the school year did not get free lunches during the summer. Now, Riverside Unified School District has been hosting barbecues in parks located in lower income neighborhoods. Riverside's young residents, ages 2 to 17, can continue receiving nutritious lunches throughout the summer; the program's director hopes other schools will follow suit. Voicewaves reports.
