Willful: A conversation to fix school discipline policy

Last month, Sacramento residents concerned about detention, suspension, and expulsion in their school district attended an event by Talk it Out, a community-based organization that tries to build bridges within communities. The event featuring a dramatic reading of a new play called Willful, about the debate over excessive use of the “willful defiance” rule in school suspensions and expulsions.   The play emphasized student-teacher relationships, and prompted an information session on the realities of suspension policies of local schools. “As you saw in this play, the story [of ‘willful defiance’ suspensions] gets bleaker. The overall data doesn’t tell that story.”  The performance and following discussion are on Access Sacramento. Watch the video on Access Sacramento.
