Diverse gardening in urban communities
Several organic farm programs in San Diego are working to improve access to fruits and vegetables for local immigrant populations. This short video by Melanie Zelaya looks at the organic garden program at Crawford High School, where students learn about organic farming, composting, and greenhouse management, with the aim connecting with the community and food sources. "Since there are a lot of fast food in this area, it's very hard for families to find healthy food, and even if they do it's expensive. Having our own gardens throughout the area allows people access to healthy food for cheaper than they can get at the grocery store." Check out this video, from Media Arts Center.
