How music is fueling #BlackLivesMatter

Can protest unify once-disconnected groups? Since Michael Brown's death in a police shooting in Ferguson, Mo., young people have been rallying in the streets of cities across the nation around the movement now dubbed #BlackLivesMatter. Music -- particularly rap and hip-hop -- has been a platform for artists to give expression to anguish and anger felt by black communities. Long Beach rappers have added their voices to the chorus, but the cumulative effect of the music and other art relating to police violence is unclear. “[Vince Staples] is exposing the issue, but there is no call to action. There is a pretty strong community organizing in Long Beach, but that is not reflected a lot in music.
