At first-ever town hall, students say they need more from teachers

When Long Beach Unified School District held its first-ever town hall meeting specifically to hear what students of color are thinking, administrators got a clear and overwhelming message: students need more support from their teachers. More focused teaching and guidance, they said, would help them stay motivated in school and see opportunities in their futures. "I feel like students need more one-on-one attention and more one-on-one guidance from teachers, faculty… people in power, basically. Maybe having classes that are smaller, and maybe seeking out students that look like they need help individually — because there are a lot of students that need  individual help but they’re just too scared to ask for it, and they don’t get it."
