Counting Boyle Heights’ homeless

Forty volunteers from Boyle Heights opted in as community participants in the 2015 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, part of a national tally to keep track of the severity and causes of homelessness in American cities. The Boyle Heights homeless count fell on the same night as the Skid Row count downtown; advocates link the two areas saying that Boyle Heights’ homeless population has grown, due in part to the displacement of Skid Row’s population. Volunteers covered some 22 census tracts in Boyle Heights, and learned about the less visible signs of homelessness. “I didn’t know there were so many people in vans and cars, I did not expect that.” Read more of the report on Boyle Heights Beat.
